How hard is Russian really? How long until basic conversation?

Everyone says Russian is one of the hardest languages. How difficult is it in practice? And realistically, how long until I can have a simple conversation—like ordering food or asking for directions?

It's challenging but not impossible. The alphabet is manageable in a few days. Grammar—cases, aspects, gender—takes longer to master. For basic conversation (greetings, simple questions, everyday situations), many students get there in 3–6 months with regular practice. Consistency and speaking practice matter more than cramming grammar.

I've been studying about a year. I can have short conversations and order in a cafe. The first few months felt slow, then it clicked. Don't let "hard" put you off—just start.

Word order is flexible and pronunciation is more regular than in English. So some things are actually easier. Focus on communication first; polish grammar over time.
