Russian Student Visa: Requirements, Documents, and Process

To study at a Russian university, you need a student visa (учебная виза). The process is based on an invitation from your university and a set of documents that you submit at a Russian consulate or visa centre. This guide explains the types of student visas, what you need to prepare, and how the process usually works.

🔑 In This Article

  • Types of Russian student visas (single, double, multiple entry)
  • What documents you need for the visa application
  • How the invitation from the university works
  • Where and how to apply (consulate vs visa centre)
  • Validity, registration, and extending your stay

Types of Russian Student Visas

Russian study visas are issued for the purpose of study (обучение). The main distinction is validity and number of entries:

Single-entry visa — For one entry. Common for short courses or the first time you come for a full programme. You enter once; after that you may need to extend or get a new visa inside Russia (depending on rules and your university).

Double-entry visa — Allows two entries. Useful if you plan to leave and re-enter Russia once during the academic year (e.g. holidays).

Multiple-entry visa — Allows many entries during its validity. Often issued for full-degree students for the duration of their studies (e.g. up to one year at a time, then extended). Rules and validity depend on the consulate and your invitation.

ℹ️ Note

The invitation from your university usually states the recommended visa type and period. The consulate or visa centre will issue the visa according to that invitation and their national rules.

The Role of the Invitation (Приглашение)

You cannot apply for a Russian student visa without an official invitation. The university (or the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs, at the university's request) issues this document.

  • What it is — A formal invitation for study, with your data, the university's details, and the study period.
  • How you get it — After you are admitted and (usually) after you pay tuition or sign a contract, the university prepares the invitation and sends it to you or to the consulate.
  • Processing time — Can take from a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the university and the authority that issues it.

Until you have the invitation, you cannot complete the visa application. So the first step is always: get admitted and receive your invitation. For how to apply to Russian universities, see our guide on applying to Russian universities.

Documents Required for the Student Visa

Requirements can vary slightly by country and consulate. Below is the typical set; always check the website of the Russian consulate or visa centre that serves your country.

1. Passport

  • Valid for at least 18 months from the date of intended entry (this is a common requirement; some consulates may ask for less or more).
  • At least two blank pages for the visa and stamps.

2. Visa application form

  • Filled in on the official Russian visa website (e.g. visa.kdmid.ru).
  • Printed, signed, and submitted with your other documents.

3. Invitation

  • Original or copy, as required by the consulate. The university may send it to the consulate directly or give you a copy to submit.

4. Photo

  • Usually 3.5×4.5 cm, recent, on a light background. Check the consulate's exact specification.

5. HIV certificate

  • Negative HIV test result, valid for 3 months in many countries. Must be issued by an authorised clinic; format may need to comply with Russian requirements (check consulate or visa centre).

6. Other documents (if required)

  • Some consulates ask for proof of financial means or medical insurance valid in Russia. The university sometimes provides insurance or tells you what to buy.
💡 Tip

Start gathering documents as soon as you receive your invitation. HIV tests and photos have validity; the invitation itself may have a limited period for visa issuance.

Where to Apply: Consulate vs Visa Centre

Russian consulate or embassy — You can apply directly at the consulate that serves your region. You usually need an appointment and may have to go in person.

Visa application centre (VAC) — In many countries, Russia uses external visa centres that accept documents, take biometrics, and forward applications to the consulate. Often easier to book and with longer opening hours.

  • Check the official site of the Russian diplomatic mission in your country for the list of consulates and any accredited visa centres.
  • Submit only what they ask for; extra documents are rarely needed and can slow things down.

Processing Time and Validity

  • Processing — Ranges from about 1–2 weeks to several weeks depending on the consulate and season. Expedited processing may be available for a fee.
  • Visa validity — The visa will state the entry period and number of entries. Do not enter before the start date or overstay the exit date.
  • Registration — After you arrive in Russia, your university (or landlord) must register you at your place of stay. Keep registration slips; you may need them for extending your visa or when leaving the country.

Registration and Extension in Russia

Registration (Регистрация)
Within a short period after arrival (often 7 working days), you must be registered at your address. The university usually does this for dormitory residents; if you rent privately, the landlord or a special service may do it. Do not skip this; it is required by law.

Extension
If your programme is longer than your current visa, the university will help you extend your visa (or get a new one) through the local migration authority. Start the process well before your current visa expires.

Common Questions

Can I work on a student visa?
Rules vary. In some cases, full-time students on state-accredited programmes can work under certain conditions. Check current Russian migration law and your university's international office.

What if my visa expires while I'm in Russia?
Overstaying is a serious offence. Always extend or renew your visa before it expires. The university's international office is your first point of contact.

Do I need a visa to study online from abroad?
If you are not entering Russia, you do not need a Russian visa. You only need a student visa when you enter Russia for study.

I have a preparatory year then a degree. One visa or two?
Often the university issues one invitation covering the preparatory year, and then helps you extend or get a new visa for the main degree. Confirm with the university.

Summary

To get a Russian student visa, you need an invitation from your university, a valid passport, a completed application form, a photo, and usually an HIV certificate. You submit these at a Russian consulate or visa centre. After you enter Russia, your university will help with registration and, if needed, extension. Start by being admitted and getting your invitation; then prepare your documents and apply in good time. For the admission side, see our guide on applying to Russian universities; for the year of Russian before your degree, see the preparatory year and Russian language year.
